Downtown homelessness and property impacts near the rescue mission
The city is updating its rules on public camping and conduct to match the U.S. Supreme Court's Grants Pass decision. Commissioners put the vote off to July 20 on a 4-2 split.
Data centers opposition
Shawnee hit pause on any new data center rezonings or permits until the end of 2027 while staff draft regulations on zoning, water use, power demands, and who pays for infrastructure. Residents pressed for a public vote and transparency; staff committed to a report within 90 days and the commission can lift the moratorium early.
Tornado Damage
A rare January tornado hit Shawnee and damaged property, catching residents off guard. Expect city cleanup crews, damage assessments, and possible disaster relief talks to follow. If you live or work in the affected area, watch for aid deadlines and city updates.
Building Collapse Investigation
A building in Shawnee collapsed, and the city says it’s still investigating why. If you’re downtown or spend time near older buildings, this is worth watching for safety concerns and possible code enforcement fallout.
Tornado Recovery Anniversary
Shawnee is marking one year since an EF-2 tornado hit, with the focus on how far recovery has come and what rebuilding still needs to happen. If you're in the affected areas, this is a check-in on progress and the city's ongoing resiliency work.
Food-sharing Permit Ordinance
Shawnee now says you need a special permit to hand out food downtown, and people who feed the homeless are pushing back. The rule could change how charity food distribution works in the city center, so it’s worth watching if you care about downtown policy or volunteer work.
